New York Heavy Rain Warning – New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams are cautioning residents about the impending heavy rain in the state, following widespread criticism of their response to recent flash flooding in the city.
New York Heavy Rain – Exactly one week after New York experienced over 5 inches of rainfall that inundated subway stations, roads, and LaGuardia Airport’s terminal, the officials are taking proactive measures.
The warning comes as the remnants of post-tropical cyclone Philippe move northward in the Atlantic, poised to bring rain to New York City overnight and into Saturday.

Mayor Adams activated the city’s Flash Flood Emergency Plan ahead of time, urging New Yorkers to be prepared for potential heavy rain and flooding.
The most critical hours to watch for were expected to be between late Friday night and sunrise on Saturday, as indicated by New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol.
A National Weather Service flood watch was in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
While widespread major impacts were not anticipated, overnight downpours could disrupt transportation, flood basements, and raise the general threat level for residents, warned Iscol’s office.
Governor Hochul also called on residents to brace for heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding across the eastern part of the state during the upcoming weekend.
A “strong, slow-moving cold front” was forecasted to bring 3 to 5 inches of rain starting on Friday and continuing into Saturday in areas like Albany, New York City, Long Island, and central New York.
The heaviest rain was expected on Saturday, with the eastern part of the state at the greatest risk of flooding.
Hochul emphasized the need for vigilance, stating, “We are keeping a close eye on a strong weather system that has the potential to dump more rain and cause more flooding
The remnants of Philippe could merge with a cold low-pressure system over the Great Lakes and southeastern Canada, moving eastward, according to federal forecasters.
“Increasing moisture from the approach of the remnants of Philippe and strengthening dynamics aloft will lead to numerous storms,” noted the National Weather Service in a forecast discussion on Friday.
The rain-producing weather was expected to move into northern New England on Sunday morning, creating localized areas of flash flooding in the Northeast.

In addition to the New York weather warnings, unusual weather conditions were forecasted in other parts of the country, including freeze warnings, frost advisories, red flag warnings for wildfires in the Gulf Coast region, and heat advisories for California beach communities.
Last month, the planet experienced its hottest September on record, as reported by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.
The warnings and preparations by New York officials come in response to criticism over their handling of the heavy rainfall and flash flooding that struck the state on September 29, with Mayor Adams defending their actions, stating that they had followed the correct protocol.
